In only two seasons in Blacksburg, Michael Vick became a Virginia Tech Hokies legend. Vick played for Tech in 1999 and 2000, before declaring for the NFL Draft, and being selected first, in April of 2000. Vick led the Hokies to an undefeated season in 1999, and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl, where they fell to Florida State. In 2000, Tech finished with one loss and faced Clemson in the Gator Bowl, defeating the Tigers, 41-20.

For most of the 1981 season, the Dan Marino led Pittsburgh Panthers were ranked No. 1. In the 1982 Sugar Bowl, they would face the Georgia Bulldogs, the defending champions. With the Bulldogs up 20-17 down the stretch with under a minute left, Marino threw a game-winning pass to tight end John Brown for the clutch victory. Marino would later call this the most memorable pass he'd thrown in his collegiate career.
